So the inaugural Organization of Professional Archery (OPA) Summit Invitational is now a wrap. The tournament will be remembered for many things – it was hosted by Levi and Samantha Morgan; the targets were long and had painted bonus rings; the wind blew almost non-stop; it rained cats and dogs and the fog was ever present Saturday; the first-ever champions were Men's Expert - Chance Beaubouef, Women's Expert - Paige Gore; Senior Expert - Duane Price.Hands down, though, the signature moment of the event was provided by Chance Beaubouef.Going into the sixth and final arrow of the Men's Expert shootdown, Beaubouef was trailing leader Jesse Broadwater by 4 points. The target was a standing bear positioned 57 yards from the shooting platform. Beaubouef stood like a statue on the platform at full draw for what seemed like an eternity, and then nailed the 14 ring. Just for perspective, the 14 ring on the standing bear is about the size of a silver dollar.It was a seemingly impossible shot, and even the always-stoic Broadwater showed a bit of amazement and concern. Levi Morgan ripped the binoculars away from his face after confirming Beaubouef had indeed hit the 14, smiled from ear to ear, and said, “No way! Are you kidding me?”Beaubouef’s shot forced Broadwater to at least hit a 10 to send the contest into sudden death – a 12 would have won it. Broadwater hit the 10.The first sudden-death target was all that was needed for Beaubouef to take home the champion’s check for $30,000.
