This Summer, we here in the United States will be celebrating our nation's 250th anniversary. It is a landmark milestone, and one that many in our country will not be taking lightly. Thirteen generations of Americans, from those that fought for our freedom during the revolution to those that enjoy the fruits of that freedom now, have been blessed with 'Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.' It is with these inalienable rights in mind that we have found and fulfilled the American spirit - one that carries us to appreciate this 'God given' nation and the natural world that comes with it.
Archery, at its heart, is that appreciation come real. Not only does archery connect us all with the natural world - the freedom to shoot and hunt within our great nation's wilderness - but it is also a core piece of our nation's history. Even Benjamin Franklin saw the utility and value in the bow and arrow when he rallied our military leaders to arm our militias with them over muskets:
Because a man may shoot as truly with a bow as with a common musket.
He can discharge 4 arrows in the time of charging and discharging one bullet.
His object is not taken from his view by the smoke of his own side.
A flight of arrows seen coming upon them terrifies and disturbs the enemy’s attention to his business.
An arrow striking in any part of a man, puts him hors de combat ‘till ‘tis extracted.
Bows and arrows are more easily provided every where than muskets & ammunition.
